The One Thing That Quietly Kills Team Performance

Woman with a sticky note covering her eyes, surrounded by notes on a wall, symbolizing leadership blind spots and lack of self-awareness.

It's not laziness.
It’s not bad intentions.
And it’s definitely not a lack of effort.

The real issue?
Blind spots.

I was reminded of this again last week while working with a brilliant leadership team in Germany. These were sharp, kind, highly motivated people—exactly the kind of group any company would be lucky to have. And yet, like most teams, they had hidden patterns that were quietly limiting their performance.

Not because they didn’t care.

But because they hadn’t yet learned how to spot what they couldn’t see.

What Is a Blind Spot?

A blind spot isn’t about ignorance. It’s the part of our thinking shaped by fear and past experience that we don’t realise is happening. It’s how our internal alarm system filters reality without us even knowing it.

And the problem with blind spots is simple:
You don’t know you have one—until the cost shows up.

It’s not about having all the answers. It’s about building the muscle to slow down, reflect, and lead with self-awareness, especially under pressure. Without this ability, even the smartest teams create unintentional blockers to progress.

The Real Cost of Unchecked Habits

In a world that’s only getting faster and more complex, the cost of running on auto-pilot is rising. Some leaders have thrived for decades on default thinking—but that won't carry them through the next five years.

The question is no longer “Am I doing OK?”
It’s “What am I not seeing—and what’s it costing my team?”

What to Do About It

This is where emotional intelligence (EQ) becomes essential—not just a nice-to-have, but a real performance edge. The strongest leaders today aren’t just strategic. They’re emotionally clear. They understand how their internal state shapes every outcome—especially in tough moments.

If you want your team to grow, start by looking at how you lead under pressure.

Because when you do, you create space for others to do the same.
